Virtual Meeting of COGENT Steering Committee and International Thematic Action Group

COGENT as a programme within the International Coconut Community (ICC) held its first virtual Steering Committee (SC) and International Thematic Action Group (ITAG) meeting between 22 and 25 June 2020. Around 50 delegates attended from 22 countries spanning 11 time-zones from Mexico/ Brazil to Fiji/Australia.

The main objectives of the meeting were to ‘reboot’ COGENT, to begin developing a strong, collaborative and sustainable network (within ICC), formally agree on the SC membership, address COGENT’s global strategy implementation, discuss next steps and articulate action points/ recommendations.

Webinar on Coconut for the Health and Economy of Indonesia during Covid-19 Pandemic

The International Coconut Community (ICC) and Sam Ratulangi University, Indonesia jointly organized a webinar on “Coconut for the health and economy of Indonesia during Covid-19 pandemic” on 10 June 2020. More than 500 people took part in the webinar from different part of the country. Dr. Annie Newell-Fugate, an assistant professor in the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences’ (CVM) Department of Veterinary Physiology and Pharmacology (VTPP), recently presented research that offers insight into the potential benefits of dietary coconut oil.

Approximately 40% of American women are obese and are at risk for metabolic syndrome, which is characterized by increased blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist, and abnormal cholesterol and triglyceride levels, all of which increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes.
